Additional Information: While conflict situations in Africa have received significant scholarly and media attention in recent decades, less attention has been paid to the long tradition of peacemaking that kept its societies in peaceful equilibrium. This conference featured papers that examined successful handling of potential conflicts that have been resolved in their early stages, as well as the range of ancient, historic and contemporary tools for mediation.

Challenges for Human Rights Enforcement in Africa

Additional Information: This presentation discussed some of the challenges facing Africa in developing an effective human rights enforcement system. Those challenges include: (1) the sensitivity of many countries to affronts to their sovereignty as a result of colonialism; (2) the greater focus of the African system of human rights protection Charter on community and societal obligations versus individual rights, as compared to other regional human rights systems; and (3) the relative underdevelopment in some countries of civil society institutions to supplement and strengthen democracy and rule of law.

Darfur Calling Symposium
September 2009, Nova Southeastern University

The Symposium was an educational event that provided attendees with rich insights into the Darfur conflict. Despite numerous media headlines, public understanding of the situation in the Sudan has been limited. Darfur Calling informed students, faculty, practicing attorneys and the general public about the history, current status, humanitarian aid options and the international legal context of the crisis in Darfur. Darfur Calling explored these issues and provided attendees with resources for becoming involved in mitigation efforts.
